  • Attendance Policy

  • Training to become a professional dancer requires a regular, intensive and rigorous programme of technical training, practice and physical fitness. Regular attendance in class is a key factor in participant progression, in both physical and artistic terms. If participants are absent, they break the patterns required within training and are disruptive to the teacher and the learning of others.

100% attendance is expected where participants must be present and on time at the beginning of all classes scheduled within their timetables unless the Head of Participation and Outreach has authorised the absence. The Attendance Policy recognises that participants may sustain injury, become ill, or may have personal difficulties that mean they cannot attend. Therefore, the minimum level of attendance required is 80%. Participants must take class on the day of rehearsal or performance.

In line with this policy, we would like to add a specific note about how we expect absences to be reported.

    Absence Reporting

If you are reporting a planned absence this needs to be communicated 7 days before your next session at a minimum for the absence to be authorised.

If you are reporting an unplanned absence this needs to be communicated before 9AM on the day you will be away at a minimum, for the absence to be authorised.

Please report all absences to shortcourses@rambertschool.org.uk as a first point of call.

Please note, that parents are welcome to wait inside to collect their children at the end of day.

    Absence Recording

Absence is recorded in the attendance registers by the Head of Participation and Outreach and his assistant using the following key:

    Authorised Absence

    • Injury (I)
    • Illness (U - Unwell)
    • Appointment or personal issues (Ex - Excused)
    • Authorised Absence (AA - for audition or external project)

    Unauthorised Absence

    • Absent (A)

    Watching

Participants who are in school and not able to dance, but are not identified as injured will be marked as

    • Watching (W)

We would expect parents/carers of under 18s and vulnerable students to:

    • Work in partnership with the School to ensure that their child is attending School as per their agreed timetable and is always on time.
    • Respond in a supportive manner if concerns are raised.
    • If the participant is unable to attend for any reason, notify the School at the earliest possible opportunity by phone or email.

    Disclaimer Rambert School staff will:

    • Actively promote the need for 100% attendance and punctuality.
    • Continuously monitor attendance throughout participants’ time at the School.
    • Address poor attendance by consistent communication with participants and parents/carers.
    • Review the attendance of all participants after the first five weeks of the academic year. Participants who have not achieved at least 80% attendance may be withdrawn from the course unless exceptional situations arise.
    • Respond to all absenteeism consistently and fairly, considering individual circumstances.
    • Provide support to students experiencing barriers to attendance and punctuality and signpost appropriately.
    • Mark all registers accurately and within the first 30 minutes of the lesson.
    • Update our safeguarding records to record any personal/pastoral issues that could affect attendance and punctuality.
    • Notify the safeguarding team where a participant with a known pastoral concern is absent.

Please note that failure to meet these requirements will result in losing your place on the programme.
